Cameras are pretty good at selecting white balance (with the exception of some indoor tungsten colors). However, sometimes the best white balance isn't the most accurate. The photo above was taken with a cloudy white balance (which removes some blue leaving it more orange), and depicts a rural college town.
The photo below depicts the miserable dreary day much more accurately.
