Contrast Masking

In visiting the Luminous Landscape site, with it's 3500 articles, I came upon the concept of Contrast Masking, which seems to be a great way to lessen the contrast of photos and maybe save some of those photos that almost look like silhouettes with the darks too dark and the lights too light.
