I was reluctant to try to take family portraits in the noon day sun, but it at least gave me an opportunity to experiment with some photoshop techniques. The following 3 images are
1) using Camera raw to lighten the harsh shadows caused by the hard light.
2) using Photomatix to create an HDR composite. First the photo was converted from Raw both underexposed and overexposed, while Photomatix blended the exposures together.

3) this last option added an unsharp mask to increase the local contrast in the image, making it somewhat gritty. This is most noticeable in the grey shorts, but the rocks become especially interesting looking manipulated this way.
