While I was really too late to figure this one out, at the one year birthday party , I had issues both with the color of light, and because it was so dark adjusting the exposure to properly get the ambient light balanced with the flash.
Now, I stumbled across the solution in the manual. The camera offers a slow speed sync that will take a picture of the background at some long exposure, then set off the flash at the end to expose the subject. This is a more automatic way to do what I did in manual.
