Bill Simone at Bill Simone Photography has 3 photos here where he describes his creation process. This is actually a composite of a woman over an HDR of the building in the background. His work is quite ingenius and he is kind enough to share not only the photographic processs, but also the photoshop process.
The 3 Photos are this one titled "the Boxer", "Ready for Take-off", and "An Artists Portrait". He uses blending modes to perfectly composite his photos, as opposed to trying to select and mask. To do this it takes preparation and photographing your photos on white, grey, or black backgrounds in anticipation of your needs.
It's a lengthy complicated read, but only because there is so much information there.
