The basics are 2 gridded lights at maybe 2 and 10 o'clock behind the subject overexposing the subject at 2 to 2.5 stops, and then a frontal light underexposing the subject by about 1 stop. This will create a strong rim around the subject.
Here it appears he also underexposed the background by about 2 stops. This could probably be done over an HDR composite as well.
