I stumbled upon a gridspot design calculator from Paulo Rodrigues, that mathematically calculates the spread of the light coming from a gridded strobe. This I am not sure how useful this is, or how accurate as there is some tapering of light, it does give a reference point if you are designing a gridspot for a specific design.
From a practical perspective, you can just move your grid closer or further away to get the size you need.
